Overview & challenges
BT Global is a global telecommunication provider based in London, United Kingdom. With several global locations BT was looking to create new experiences that ‘draw people in’ at their location in One Braham and also meet sustainability goals. According to Colin Bannon, CTO, BT Business, “Working with Cisco, we wanted to approach it as a persona-based design model. Underneath the simplicity that is exposed within the building, we’re really doing full suite end-to-end. It has unlocked an additional focus on ‘how do you get the most out of the technology?’.”
Achieving energy efficiency and sustainability
On each of their floors BT has around 550 wireless access points. Working with CX, BT is able to use their Cisco hardware and the Cisco Spaces software to create rules, so that when a cleaner comes onto a floor or there’s an executive working late, the particular section of the floor wakes up automatically. In addition to being a positive step towards sustainability, Colin admits that this system is also better for their costs.
“We’re looking at probably over 70 per cent less electricity to run 10x worth of performance… That’s better for sustainability and it’s better for our costs.“
– Colin Bannon, CTO, BT Business
Colin says that today, BT is ‘100 per cent sustainable in terms of the sources of energy’ that they use to power the network. The CTO of BT Business adds that working with CX has been important to make the concept of smart buildings repeatable and sustainable across all their facilities. “Cisco CX is more than one thing to me, whether it be lifecycle management or whether it be adoption or whether it be professional services,” he says, stressing that finding ways to continue to innovate will be the way forward and super important for the telecommunication giant. “Cisco, together with BT, it really is a ‘better together’ story,” he says.
