Overview & challenges

The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees several hospitals in West Yorkshire, started to combat COVID-19 in early 2020. Due to the global shortage and demand for PPE and ventilators, it required a reliable solution for medical equipment tracking and to track supplies across two sites, 24/7. Access to the right equipment at the right time was of critical importance.

Reliable access to critical equipment through medical equipment tracking

To be able to accurately track all equipment – from iPads to ventilators – the Trust chose an asset tracking solution that relied on STANLEY (now Securitas Healthcare) Healthcare’s AeroScout and Cisco Spaces.

The system is also able to track wireless devices with MAC addresses, making it a reliable solution to prevent loss or theft. During the pandemic, when there was a critical shortage of devices like ventilators, tracking the real-time location of medical equipment was a boon to staff.

Asset tracking was always on our roadmap. During the pandemic, we had to really pick the pace up. Clinicians now have the right equipment in the right place at the right time. Frontline staff have more time to care for patients.

The Cisco Spaces and STANLEY Healthcare integration: Cisco Spaces provides data to Securitas Healthcare (previously STANLEY Healthcare) with a robust Firehose API, enabled with24/7 monitoring. The integration simplifies deployment with an increased up-time through a cloud and connector model with active/active HA. Time to deploy, maintain and upgrade is also significantly reduced when compared to traditional architecture. There’s also high scalability of RTLS capabilities across multiple locations. Proactive, end-to-end monitoring of the partner app, the Firehose API and data flow between controllers, connectors, applications and Cisco Spaces, ensures reduced downtime.

Besides asset management, healthcare providers can leverage this integration for use cases like environmental and temperature monitoring, staff, patient and infant protection and also workflow, hand-hygiene compliance.
